Chats are a way to communicate with others in real time or live. With a chatroom, you can enter in a room and type in your users name and then type a message.
You can have private or public chat with anyone that is in the same room that you have entered. Any time you are in a public chatroom and you are sending messages anyone in the room will be able to read and respond to your messages.
A forum is a type of public message center. You can find many different types of forums on the internet relating to various topics from webmaster information to cooking. With this type of message system, you can post your replies to the topic of interest and others can be able to read and respond to your message.
Forums are threaded, this means that a reply that is posted becomes part of the thread and all replies will stay on the thread. This keeps all individuals that have an interest in the topic to keep up on the progression of the thread.
